Cut La Funk
Cut La Funk is a master in daytime chilled DJ sets and will hand pick an eclectic laid back selection of the finest in chilled, good-for-the-Soul Vibrations. From Reggae to laidback Soul, Downtempo to Jazzy Vibrations & beyond! We got the Location & the Vibration!
It’s been a non-stop journey across many decades from the beginning of Rave culture and the birth of House music through to being at the fore front of a plethora of new and exciting sounds and genres throughout the 90s and beyond. Bob Baker aka Cut La Funk has been an avid crate digger for over 40 years and started DJing in clubs back in the day when he was just 14 years of age. “You are only as good as the records that you draw for & if you don’t have ‘em, you can’t compete!” That sentiment still stands firm 35 years on from that first club gig where he showed his elders, “who got the wax!”
Today in a world which is built on fake likes and a sea of hype, most DJ or artist biographies lack depth and history. With 35 years in the game, his knowledge of quality music across the spectrum and his reputation for bringing the vibes, is truly a skillset that only the very finest selectors who have earnt their stripes possess.
His talents have been requested to warm up shows for some of the world’s finest from Soul II Soul, Roy Ayers, Maxi Priest, Sly & The Family Stone to The Fatback Band, Loose Ends, Aswad, Melle Mel & The Furious Five & The Sugar Hill Gang to name just a few! He has also been the DJ, promoters and club owners call upon to warm up alongside some of the most respected and best in the business! “I have been blessed to have worked alongside so many amazing selectors.” From DJ Jazzy Jeff, Norman Jay MBE, Jazzie B OBE, Marshall Jefferson, Mr Thing, A Skillz, Krafty Kuts, Aba Shanti I, Mad Professor & Mr Scruff who has personally asked him to warm up shows on several occasions. “For me to be asked by someone I consider to be one of the world’s greatest selector’s is very humbling and a true honour”.
As a radio broadcaster he has interviewed countless icons in Funk, Soul, Hip Hop & House music from, Candi Staton to Gwen McCrae, Kenny Dope to Jazzy Jeff “& the one that I will never forget, James Brown’s band leader & Saxophonist the Jazz legend Pee Wee Ellis!” “I was in heaven hearing first-hand Pee Wee’s memories of working in the studio and touring with the inventor of the Funk & the Godfather of Soul, Mr Brown!”
His music has also featured on around 50 different compilation albums alongside legendary artists like Masters at Work, Todd Terry, Kerri Chandler, Basement Jaxx & Armand Van Helden to name just a few.
He has also held DJ residencies for some of worlds finest clubs, “back in the day when clubs were given that profile and kudos because the vibe and the space was literally one of the best in the world.” “This was real, no fakin’ the funk, the real deal!”
He’s got some vibes as well and probably owns one of the deepest record collections in the UK. With his DJ inspirations ranging from Gilles Peterson to Mr Scruff, Louie Vega & Kenny Dope, DJ Harvey to Nightmares on Wax to Notting Hill stalwarts Aba Shanti I & Norman Jay MBE. Add that in the mix together with his eclectic encyclopaedic knowledge of music and you are in for a real treat!
